I volunteered to tutor Freshman in math, is there anything I should do to prepare?

My NHS director asked me to help out this freshman teacher, and tutor freshman in math during my free periods. I’m not sure if the Freshman now have math text books, but we didn’t when I had Freshman math. So, I was wondering, how should I go about helping these kids out? I know to help them with homework and make sure they understand their notes and such. But, I don’t think I can tutor efficiently without a math text book. I do have this little book that has math practice problems in it and a few math CDs I don’t need. Should I offer to let the kids borrow and practice on these? I’m a bit reluctant to hand out the book though but, I think the CDs should be fine. The only tutoring I’ve done before was with the violin and Spanish to elementary kids. The violin is simple, you can make up music and follow along in the music book, and with Spanish I just used take home DVDs and helped them on what ever they weren’t clear about. Do you think the teacher will be able help me out, like give me materials to help them? Do you think the Freshman will be more difficult to tutor then elementary kids? I’d just like to read a few suggestions on whatever I should do to help make my tutoring efficient. Thank you.
Oh, and I did tutor my friend in math just last year, for a short time. I was able to tutor well then with a math text book. We have text books in all the higher maths. (Well at least I know for certain we do)

The best thing to do is review the material you’re going to be tutoring. If you have notes from freshman year for math, look them over. Ask the teacher of the freshman math class if you can get your hands on the textbook for the class you’re tutoring. That’s really important to do.
One other thing to remember is that it’s okay to show a student how to find an answer or do a problem, but don’t just give them the answer. I spent a semester tutoring middle school students, (ages 11-13) and that was one of the most important things I had to learn.
